Our Process

At the heart of our story and design is rattan, one of the few natural materials used in wicker weaving. Our rattan is a vine like plant that grows mainly in the Indonesian rainforests famed for it's durability and versatility.

Our baskets are woven in the country where our rattan is grown meaning your handbag comes with a smaller carbon footprint, moving towards a more conscious wardrobe.

After falling in love with the artistry and understanding the decline in the demand for handwoven jobs, we aim to shine light on this beautiful art through modern, considered design using the finest and most natural materials.

All our materials are responsibly sourced.

The rattan seed is planted on a small family farm in the Philippines, it is nurtured and grown to around 6 feet where it is then cut, prepared and then sent to our small village of artisans in China.

Each basket is intricately hand-made in our home village in China using age-old techniques that have been handed down through generations of highly skilled artisans. Once this process is complete, each basket is sent to our small studio in England.

We source our baskets from our small hometown village in China, the same village where our 嫲嫲 (māma, grandmother) used to hand weave.

We work with a tannery based out of Tuscany that specialise in the highest quality Italian vegetable tanned leather. Moving away from the chrome tanned leather you often see in many handbags, the method of tanning our leather uses natural materials such as bark, leaves and other natural tannins to achieve the end result.

We work closely with our small team of passionate and experienced leather artisans here at our studio in England who cut, prep and finish each leather piece ready to be assembled in house. Combining the Chinese artisanal work with British leather craftsmanship, our products are made at our studio in England by a small team of passionate artisans. Each handbag is beautifully made in England.

Our beautifully made and well designed handbags are a result of having spent years developing and sourcing the right materials for each and every Wicker Wings product. Each handbag is a physical memoir of our grandmother’s artisanal past and represents a movement in giving this age-old technique that have been handed down through generations a new lease of life.
